Film description

"The Blue Angel" (Der blaue Engel) is a film adaptation of Heinrich Mann's novel Professor Unrat, released in 1930 under the direction of Josef von Sternberg. The film tells the tragic story of the high school professor Immanuel Rath (played by Emil Jannings), who is socially ruined by his passionate relationship with the bar singer Lola Lola (Marlene Dietrich, in her breakthrough role).

The film marked the international breakthrough of Marlene Dietrich, who became an icon of sound film with her song “Ich bin von Kopf bis Fuß auf Liebe eingestellt” (I'm ready for love from head to toe). With its mixture of social criticism, melodrama, and musical staging, Der blaue Engel is considered one of the most important German films of the Weimar Republic and a milestone in film history.
