Film description

Wim Wenders' The Goalkeeper's Fear of the Penalty Kick is based on the short story of the same name by Peter Handke and was released in 1972. The film tells the story of former soccer goalkeeper Josef Bloch (played by Arthur Brauss), who wanders aimlessly through Vienna after being sent off and eventually commits murder.

With his calm, almost laconic narrative style, the precise camera work of Robby Müller, and his minimalist, poetic style, Wenders shows a protagonist who becomes increasingly alienated from reality. The film is considered an important contribution to New German Cinema and also marks the beginning of the close artistic collaboration between Wenders and Handke.
